On Saturday afternoon the Central Spears made it 4 Capital Bowl championships in a row in a hard fought game over the UC Firebirds Gridiron Club.

The Central Spears began play in 2012, effectively taking over the operation of the Astros club that was scheduled to fold. The Spears won the ACT Gridiron championship in their first year of existence and again in 2013 and 2014.

The Firebirds know all about winning multiple championships with a 4-peat of the 05, 06, 07, 08 Capital Bowls and then back to back in 2010 and 2011. The Firebirds were also the runners up last season so the 2015 Capital Bowl was set up for a classic.

The Central Spears opened up the scoring early but things did not go all their own way with the Firebirds taking an advantage going into halftime leading a close hard played game 20 to 16.

Both teams added touchdown in the 3rd quarter and the Firebirds were still leading 27 to the Spears 22 going into the final quarter.

Both teams turned to their defences in the 4th quater and the game looked like it might be headed towards the Firebirds. The game headed inside the 2 min warning with the Spears knocking on the door of the end zone.

The Firebirds were not able to hang onto their lead as a pass from the Spears found a receiver and the Spears took the lead 28-27 and this is how the match would end.

Congratulations to the Central Spears making it a 4-peat of Capital Bowls.
