Etihad Stadium

The NCAA has approved a three-year halt to new bowl games, which is bad news for Australian football fans. Etihad Stadium has been working to bring a bowl game to Melbourne with the plan to play the game on Boxing Day 2016.

The NCAA Division I Council’s decision comes a year after there were not enough bowl-eligible teams to fill the record 41 postseason games, resulting in a record three teams with losing records earning bowl berths.

The moratorium will not allow any new bowl games until after the 2019 regular season.

This decision makes the chance of a bowl game coming to Australia almost zero, the best chance would be to work with an existing bowl game and try to move that bowl game to Australia.

Three US locations were also working with the NCAA to get a bowl game namely Austin, Texas; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina.

If you want to see some college football in Australia better get your tickets to the Cal vs Hawaii game in Sydney in August.

No College Bowl Game for Melbourne.
