Happy Tuesday everybody! And Tuesday at Gridiron Downunder means it’s time for the GV Players of the Week. Week 9 was an interesting week with some close games, a few blowouts and a tie in Division 1 for the first time this year. Once again we have a nice mixture of great positional play (Including plenty of love for the Offensive Line) to form this week’s list of awesome football players.

(Editor’s note: The Western Crusaders and Ballarat Falcons had the respective byes in each division this week, and are not featured)

Matthew PlatheBendigo Dragons – Matthew Plathe, Centre

Team Captain Plathe led an outstanding effort from the Bendigo Dragon Front 5 in their win over the Barbarians. He was excellent in both pass protection and run blocking for an offence that generated 50 points. He also filled in on defence with some crucial tackles.

Brad FergusonBerwick Miners – Brad Ferguson, Quarterback

160 passing yards, 60 rushing yards

Sorely missed during his time away on Australian Representative duties, Ferguson did it all for the Miners on offence in their loss to the Predators. He again showcased his great escape ability and arm strength as a roll-out passer, as well as getting yards on the ground.

Todd DawsonCroydon Rangers – Todd Dawson, Wide Receiver

88 receiving yards, 1 TD

Dawson was Croydon’s key receiving threat in the 20-20 tie against the Melbourne Uni Royals. He worked well in both the slot and out wide and came up with some big catches on third down to keep the Ranger Offence moving.

Matt LawranceGeelong Buccaneers – Matthew Lawrance, Wide Receiver

60 receiving yards

In a tough day for the Buccaneers, Lawrance was a shining light at wideout. He was the only player to cause Monash any significant problems, getting open consistently against their secondary for catches and drawing pass interference penalties.

Jesse PetersGippsland Gladiators – Jesse Peters, Defensive Tackle

11 total tackles, 1 TD

Peters has been a beast all year for the Glads, leading the defence and chipping in on offence when needed. Against the Raiders on Saturday night he was once again in the thick of it, making tackles at will and punching in Gippsland’s only score of the night.

Josh CanningMelbourne Uni Royals – Josh Canning, Offensive Guard

Canning put on a pass protection clinic in the Royals tie against Croydon, and was also instrumental in the run game. His awareness and motor in getting downfield on broken plays were another a big reason for the Royals offensive success.

Jordan GlanvilleMelton Wolves – Jordan Glanville, Quarterback

110 passing yards, 1 TD

Glanville had the task of playing under centre this week, and put in a valliant effort against the undefeated Silverbacks. He threw for over one hundred yards, including a 52 yard TD, and also played hard on defence and special teams.

Luke PhelanMonash Barbarians – Luke Phelan, Wide Receiver

71 receiving yards

A bright spark on a rough day for the Barbarians, Phelan provided a solid target for QB Sean Roche. Was able to get by Bendigo’s secondary on multiple occasions, highlighted by an incredible David Tyree-esque catch during the third quarter.

Luke JacksonMonash Warriors – Luke Jackson, Runningback

150 rushing yards

GV All-Star Jackson dominated the Geelong Buccaneer defence en route to a buck fifty in rushing. His combination of size and speed is close to unstoppable over the course of a full game, and his performance spearheaded what was ultimately an easy win for Monash.

Kevin OnteNorthern Raiders – Kevin Onte, Wide Receiver

108 receiving yards

Onte continued his fine season with another great game in the Raider’s Saturday night victory over Gippsland. On top of his efforts as a pass catching threat, Onte was also a key contributor on offence as a blocker in the run game.

Adam KolinskiPakenham Silverbacks – Adam Kolinski, Linebacker

12 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FR

The 57 points that the Silverback offence put up against the Wolves was a direct result of this man’s work on defence, providing them with optimal field position. His twelve tackles included six for loss. A phenomenal effort from “The Phantom”.

Ben ClarkSouth Eastern Predators – Ben Clark, Defensive Back

13 total tackles, 1 pass def, 1 INT

The Predators managed to get out of dodge with a close win over the Miners this past weekend, and the main reason was the outstanding play in the secondary from the man they call “Twinkles”. Was also a factor on Special Teams.

Jamie Stafford

Tina Fey-loving current starting QB (at least until Richie gives me the hook) of the Croydon Rangers in Gridiron Victoria, as well as the Head Coach of the Croydon Rangers women's team. I once got my hair washed by a total stranger in a Subiaco salon at 5am while playing for the 2004 Victorian team. That was a good day.
