It’s finally here!!! Championship weekend.

2016 meetings

  • Week 5 – Silverbacks 36, Raiders 0
  • Week 12 – Silverbacks 49, Raiders 8

Welcome to Division 2 Championship game VI! To put that in perspective against other legendary events denoted by Roman numerals, check out the following list:

  • In Superbowl VI, the Dallas Cowboys won the first of five post-merger titles at the conclusion of the 1971 NFL season, with Roger Staubach engineering a 24-3 pantsing of the Miami Dolphins.
  • At Wrestlemania VI, The Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan to become the first man to hold both the WWF World Championship and Intercontinental Championship simultaneously.
  • In Star Trek VI, Kirk and Spock are falsely accused of assassinating a Klingon High Chancellor, and wacky hi-jinx ensues…

With this game being played between two teams that have been here and won before, this VI promises to be better than the above III VI’s combined. At the end of the regular season, I think it was safe to say that everyone envisioned a Pakenham Silverbacks/Bendigo Dragons final. While the Silverbacks got through to the big dance with a comprehensive beating of the Monash Barbarians, the Dragons did not find it as easy. In a contest played in howling winds, the Raiders handled the conditions better and came from behind in the last quarter to win 8-5, a credit to their vaunted defence. The Silverbacks, in what should be pristine conditions at Lakeside Stadium, will serve as a much tougher test however.

Unfortunately, I don’t see this being close but as we saw last week, expect the unexpected. Will the Raiders win their 2nd Division 2 Championship or will the Silverbacks continue their domination of this division and repeat as champions?

Come along this Sunday to find out and stay for VIC BOWL XXXII.

Final Score Prediction – SILVERBACKS 44 V RAIDERS 8

MVP – KEVIN RUSSELL (Silverbacks)
