The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed punter Jordan Berry, a native of Essendon in Victoria who punted collegiately at Eastern Kentucky from 2010-2013.
Berry was a member of the Eastern Kentucky University football program from 2009-13 and was a three-time All-OVC punter. As a senior he was part of a punting unit that ranked first in the OVC and fifth nationally (FCS) in net punting at 39.08 yards per punt.
In the 2013 win at Southeast Missouri, Berry nearly set a program record and scored a touchdown on a fake field goal. His first punt that day was a 76-yarder that was just two yards shy of the EKU single-game record. In the second quarter, Berry was the holder as EKU lined up for a 42-yard field goal attempt. He took the snap and ran 25 yards untouched for a touchdown.
The Steelers’ incumbent punter is Brad Wing a LSU product also hails from Melbourne, Wing punted in all 16 games for Pittsburgh last season, posting 43.7-yard gross and 38.8-yard net averages.
Wing ranked 29th among 32 punters for average per attempt and for punts downed inside the 20, Wing ranked 28th among NFL punters. The Steelers are clearly looking to improve these numbers for the upcoming 2015 NFL season.
