Welcome to our new weekly segment here at Gridiron Downunder, the GV Players of the Week. We have just completed Week 6 of the 2016 Gridiron Victoria season, and there were some standout individual performances from all teams, in both Division 1 and Division 2, worth celebrating.
Whether you’re into passing, running, receiving, defence or special teams, we’ve got someone who did it well in this week’s batch of outstanding football players.
Ballarat Falcons – Duncan McIntosh, Quarterback
59 passing yards, 83 rushing yards, 1 rush TD
The improving McIntosh led his offence gallantly in a Week 5 loss to the Monash Barbarians. While the passing game struggled, McIntosh was able to move the ball with his legs, averaging 10 yards a carry and scoring a touchdown on the ground.

Bendigo Dragons – Jarrod Prentice, Wide Receiver
143 receiving yards, 2 TD
In only his second game back after a rookie season wrecked by injury in 2015, Prentice was a beast in the Dragons 26-7 victory over the Gippsland Gladiators. A buck forty-three and 2 scores is a day out for any receiver in GV |
Croydon Rangers – Liam Fordham, Safety
9 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles, 1 pass def
Fordham continued his strong 2016 play in Croydon’s 26-20 win over the Geelong Buccaneers, providing outstanding run support and leading the Rangers in tackles from the safety position, against an offence determined to play smashmouth football. |
Geelong Buccaneers – Daniel Barnett
Runningback – 173 rushing yards, 2 TD
The 2-time VGOA Best and Fairest was at his scintillating best in the Buccs tight loss to Croydon. Geelong leaned hard on their franchise back to deliver the offensive goods, and the perennial all-star did not disappoint with 173 yards and 2 scores |
Melbourne Uni Royals – Tokoa Tangatakino, Runningback
157 rushing yards, 170 Total yards
The reigning GV Offensive MVP was the driving force behind the Royals 14-12 upset win over the Western Crusaders, providing 170 yards of total offence, highlighted by a 48 rumble late that set up what ultimately proved to be the winning score |
Northern Raiders – Nathan Nicolaou, Linebacker
11 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles, 2 pass def
Against the most potent offence in Division 2, Raiders Team Captain Nicolaou put in an outstanding night’s work. “Calves” was a sideline-to-sideline tackling machine and without him their losing margin could have been doubled |
Pakenham Silverbacks – Jason Howlett
Wide Receiver – 140 receiving yards, 2 TD
It was Howlett who got the all-conquering Silverback machine going in Saturday night’s win over the Northern Raiders, scoring the opening touchdown and keeping the foot on the pedal throughout with a commanding receiving performance. |
South Eastern Predators – David Handakas, Runningback
58 rushing yards, 63 return yards, 1 TD
“Speedy” to his teammates, Handakas demonstrated exactly that quality in the Predators fighting loss to the league leading Monash Warriors. He generated 121 total yards from only 9 touches, which included a 45 yard reverse play to the house |
Western Crusaders – Tyson Garnham, Offensive Back
The multi-faceted Garnham was once again the focal point of the Crusader offence in their tough defeat at the hands of the Royals. Pound-for pound one of the toughest players in the league, he continued his great run in 2016 with another elite performance. |
