Happy New Year and welcome to the 2nd half of the 2023 Gridiron Victoria season. Just the 2 games to open the Men’s competition.

Home side Geelong Buccaneers, were looking to consolidate a top 4 spot with their game against the last placed Northern Raiders. Despite being low on numbers before the xmas break, the Raiders looked to have had a few key outs return for 2024. One being club President Daniel Clark, who I don’t think we had seen suit up this season (correct me if I am wrong).

As per their first matchup in round 1. The Buccaneers had control from the beginning. They piled on 58 points but to the Raiders credit, they put 20 points on the Bucs defense. Something I’m sure Buccaneers HC Daniel Noonan wouldn’t have been happy about.

The Raiders host the Warriors in a rematch of the round 9 epic battle. If you are available at 10am Sunday morning in Reservoir, head on down to this one. While the Buccaneers get a week off.

Game Highlights by Onside Kick Productions – Dragons v Wolves

The Bendigo Dragons took the trip down to Corio to host the Melton Wolves. Last time these 2 met, the Wolves were too strong in the end for the battling Dragons. Would this rematch have a similar outcome? or would the Dragons get their season back on track and make a push for the top 6?

It was the Dragons who looked to be the most switched on when this game began. The Wolves splutted on defense, allowing an epic run by Dragons QB Joseph Hughes, that definitely deserved to end in 6 points for the big guy.

The Dragons held onto a 14-0 half time lead. After a 3rd quarter Field Goal try by Thomas Prince, the Dragons were in control at 17-0. The Wolves finally got a drive going that ended up in a 15yd rushing TD and the successful 2 point attempt. That’s where it ended for the Wolves. The Dragons scored 2 more times, runnng out 31-8 winners and pushing themselves into that all important 6th position. While the Wolves who seemed more concerned with the refs, stay in 2nd last, a game clear of the Raiders.

The Dragons will need to make the trip to Reservoir to take on the Cru II while the Wolves have the huge task of trying to tame the Croydon Rangers offense.

Other game is South Eastern Predators V Western Crusaders on Saturday in Endeavour Hills.
